Year 3 Science - Muscles and Movement

Year 3 have been learning about how our muscles work together with our skeleton to help us move. Building on their understanding of bones, the children explored how muscles contract and relax to move different parts of the body.

They investigated how we use our muscles during everyday activities such as walking, running and lifting, and discussed the important role muscles play in helping us move.

As part of their practical learning, the children made their own model hands using paper, straws and cotton. They carefully threaded the cotton through the straws to create their own ‘tendons’, allowing them to pull the fingers and make them bend and move. This hands-on activity helped the children understand how muscles and tendons work together to create movement.

The children were also introduced to prosthetic limbs and learned how advances in science and technology can help people who have lost a limb to move and carry out everyday activities.

Through discussion, observation and practical activities, Year 3 have developed their understanding of muscles and movement and explored how science and technology can make a positive difference to people’s lives.
