Year 6 Road Safety Workshop

Year 6 recently took part in an informative Road Safety Workshop, where they learned how to stay safe when travelling as passengers, pedestrians and cyclists.

Throughout the session, pupils explored a range of important safety topics and discussed how their choices can help keep themselves and others safe when using roads and pavements. The workshop encouraged children to think carefully about potential dangers and how to reduce risks in everyday situations.

As passengers, the children learned why wearing a seatbelt on every journey is essential, no matter how short the trip may be. They discussed how seatbelts protect people in the event of sudden braking or an accident and why it is important to sit sensibly and avoid distracting the driver.

When learning about pedestrian safety, Year 6 pupils revisited the Green Cross Code and discussed safe places to cross the road. They were reminded to stop, look, listen and think before crossing and to stay alert at all times. The workshop highlighted the dangers of distractions such as mobile phones and headphones, which can prevent people from noticing approaching traffic or other hazards.

The cycling section focused on the importance of being visible and protected when riding a bike. Pupils learned why wearing a correctly fitted helmet is vital and discussed suitable clothing, including bright or reflective items that help cyclists be seen by other road users. They also learned about the importance of having working lights and reflectors on bicycles, especially during darker mornings and evenings.

As many of our Year 6 pupils prepare for greater independence and their transition to secondary school, the workshop provided valuable life skills that will help them make safe and responsible choices. We hope that they will continue to use the advice they have learned and share these important road safety messages with family and friends.

A big thank you to our visitor for delivering such an informative and enjoyable workshop.
