Year 2 Computing - Algorithms

Year 2 Computing - Algorithms
In Computing, Year 2 have been learning about algorithms and how computers follow instructions.
The children have been using Google Doodle, an app that allows them to create simple drawings which can then be used as part of an animation or game. Through this, pupils learned that computers do not make decisions on their own and must be given clear instructions to work properly. They explored how their drawings could be turned into something that moves or responds on screen, helping them understand how digital content is created.
Alongside this work, the children explored algorithms using LEGO. They each built a simple model using three bricks and then wrote an algorithm to explain how to build it. An algorithm is a set of instructions, and pupils practised following step‑by‑step directions to build models. They also had opportunities to create their own instructions for others to follow, learning how important it is to give clear and accurate steps. These instructions were shared with a partner, who followed the steps to recreate the model.
These activities have helped Year 2 develop their understanding of algorithms and sequencing, while also encouraging careful thinking and co-operation. The children realised the instructions need to be clear and in the correct order for it to work successfully.
Well done Year 2!
