Year 5 Bikeability

Year 5 pupils recently took part in the Bikeability programme — a fantastic cycle training initiative that teaches far more than just how to ride a bike.

Specialist instructors visited the school to deliver the training, which supports the development of essential life skills. The children began by practising key skills and bike control on the playground before heading out onto the roads in the afternoon to apply what they had learned in real-world settings. Our HPL value of “Realising – Automatically” was clearly seen in action. As the children’s confidence grew, their bike control became more automatic, allowing them to concentrate on navigating roads and traffic safely.

Bikeability doesn’t just build cycling skills. It helps children become more independent, boosts social skills, encourages well-being, and improves their ability to respond to risks. Pupils leave the programme feeling more confident, and we often see an increase in the number of children cycling to school – something that supports both physical health and mental well-being.

The Bikeability programme has been a brilliant addition to the Year 5 experience, equipping pupils with practical skills that will benefit them both now and in the future.

Well done, Year 5 and thank you to the instructors!
