Year 5 Science - Filtering

Year 5 have been developing their understanding of filtering in Science. The children investigated how different materials can be used to separate unwanted particles from water and explored which materials were most effective at making the water clearer.

Working together, the children designed and tested their own filters using a range of materials, including rocks, sand, pasta and cotton wool. They had to think carefully about how much of each material to use and decide on the order in which to place them in their filter.

The children then poured water through their filters and carefully observed the results. They compared the water produced by different filters, looking closely at which combinations and quantities of materials appeared to make the water clearer.

It was great to see the children making predictions, carrying out a fair test, making observations and discussing their results. They enjoyed the hands-on investigation and showed great enthusiasm as they explored how different materials can be used for filtering.
