Year 4 Science Investigation of Temperature

Year 4 have been busy carrying out a science investigation to find out how temperature affects the speed at which ice melts.

The children worked in small groups and were given pieces of ice. Each piece of ice was placed in a different condition: one with no water, one in cold water, one in warm water and one in hot water. Before starting the experiment, the children made predictions about which piece of ice they thought would melt the fastest and explained their reasoning.

They then carefully observed the ice over time, watching closely to see what happened in each container. The children recorded their observations and discussed any changes they noticed as the ice began to melt at different speeds. There were lots of thoughtful discussions as the groups compared their results and considered why the ice in certain temperatures melted more quickly than others.

This experiment helped the children understand how heat energy affects solids and how temperature can change the state of materials. The class showed excellent teamwork, curiosity and scientific thinking throughout the investigation.

Well done Year 4 for your fantastic scientific enquiry!
